About Smooth Yellow Violet

Smooth Yellow Violet (Viola pubescens var. eriocarpa) is a cheerful spring native that brightens woodland floors with its vibrant yellow blooms. Growing 6 to 12 inches tall, this perennial is distinguished by its smooth, heart-shaped leaves and bright yellow flowers featuring delicate purple veining on the lower petals, which serve as nectar guides for visiting insects. Blooming from April through June, it provides an important early nectar source for native bees and serves as a host plant for Fritillary butterflies. Native to the eastern and central United States, it is most at home in the dappled light of rich, moist hardwood forests. Unlike many other violets, it possesses a branched stem habit, giving it a slightly more upright appearance. It is an excellent choice for woodland gardens or shaded borders, where it can gently naturalize to form a lush, flowering groundcover. It prefers partial to full shade and rich, loamy, moist soils.
