About Tall Ironweed

Tall Ironweed is a true giant of the native plant world, capable of reaching impressive heights of 5 to 10 feet. This majestic perennial commands attention in late summer when its towering stems are topped with broad, loose clusters of vibrant purple flowers. Blooming from August into October, it serves as a critical late-season fuel station for migrating butterflies and busy pollinators. Its lance-shaped leaves are large and deeply veined, adding a lush, architectural feel to the garden. Native to the eastern and central United States, Tall Ironweed is commonly found in damp meadows, floodplains, and along stream banks. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers rich, moist soils, though it is surprisingly adaptable to a range of conditions. Given its height, it is best placed at the back of a large border or used in meadow restorations where it can naturalize freely. While it can be aggressive in small spaces, its ecological benefits and striking presence make it an invaluable addition to any large-scale native planting.
