About Wingstem

Wingstem is a striking, tall perennial that earns its name from the unique, leafy "wings" that run vertically down its sturdy stems. Reaching heights of 4 to 8 feet, this late-summer standout produces clusters of bright yellow flowers with distinctively drooping rays that resemble miniature shuttlecocks. Blooming from August through October, Wingstem provides a vital late-season nectar source for a variety of pollinators, including long-tongued bees, butterflies, and even the occasional hummingbird. It is native to the eastern and central United States, typically thriving in moist meadows, woodland edges, and floodplain forests. While it prefers partial shade and medium-to-wet soils, it is remarkably adaptable to full sun if moisture is sufficient. Because of its vigorous growth and ability to form dense colonies, it is an excellent choice for naturalized areas or large rain gardens where it can provide structural interest and essential wildlife support. For best results, sow seeds in the fall to allow for natural cold stratification.
