About Large-flowered Trillium

The Large-flowered Trillium, also known as the Great White Trillium, is the undisputed queen of the spring woodland. This iconic native perennial is famous for its large, three-petaled white blossoms that can reach up to 4 inches across. Rising 12 to 15 inches tall, the plant features a characteristic whorl of three broad, ovate leaves that provide a lush green backdrop for the stunning flowers. Each bloom emerges pure white in April or May and gradually fades to a soft, romantic pink as it ages. Native to rich, moist deciduous forests across eastern North America, it thrives in partial to full shade and humus-rich, well-drained soil. This slow-growing species is a vital component of the forest ecosystem, offering nectar to early bees while its seeds are dispersed by ants. While it requires patience to grow from seed, the reward is a spectacular, long-lived display that can create breathtaking white carpets across the forest floor for decades if left undisturbed.
