About Rue Anemone

Rue Anemone is one of the most charming spring ephemerals, dotting the forest floor with delicate blossoms as the woodland awakens. This petite native typically grows only 4 to 9 inches tall, featuring whorls of three-lobed leaves that look remarkably like those of Meadow Rue. From April to June, it produces an abundance of dainty white to pale pink flowers, each with a ring of showy sepals surrounding a cluster of yellow stamens. It is native to the rich, deciduous woodlands of eastern North America, where it thrives in the dappled light of the spring canopy. These early blooms provide a critical food source for small native bees and bee flies when few other plants are in flower. As a true ephemeral, it often goes dormant in the heat of summer, so it is best planted among ferns or late-emerging perennials that can fill the gap. It prefers moist, humus-rich soil and partial to full shade, making it a perfect candidate for a naturalized woodland garden or a shaded rockery.
