About Swamp Aster

Swamp Aster, also known as Red-stemmed Aster, is a robust and striking native perennial that thrives in the wettest corners of the landscape. It is one of the tallest asters, often reaching heights of 3 to 7 feet. It is easily identified by its stout, hairy stems that are frequently tinged with deep purple or red. From August through October, it produces a profusion of large, showy flowers with pale blue to deep violet-purple rays and yellow centers. Native to swamps, marshes, and wet meadows across Eastern and Central North America, it is a magnet for pollinators, including many species of bees and butterflies. Swamp Aster prefers full sun to partial shade and consistently wet to medium-wet soils. Its impressive stature and late-season color make it a magnificent choice for wetland restorations, pond edges, or large-scale rain gardens where its bold presence can be fully appreciated.
