About Aromatic Aster

Aromatic Aster is a tough, low-growing native perennial that surprises the senses with a pleasant, balsamic fragrance released when its grey-green foliage is crushed. Reaching only 1 to 3 feet in height, it forms a dense, mounded habit that is completely covered in sky-blue to violet flowers during the peak of autumn. As one of the latest-blooming asters, often continuing into November, it provides a vital nectar lifeline for pollinators when most other floral resources have vanished. Native to dry prairies, rocky outcrops, and limestone barrens across the Central and Eastern United States, it is exceptionally drought-tolerant and hardy. Aromatic Aster thrives in full sun and well-drained, medium-dry to dry soils, making it a perfect choice for rock gardens, slopes, or challenging sunny spots. Its compact, tidy form does not require staking, and it can be lightly sheared after blooming to maintain its attractive shape, ensuring it remains a low-maintenance highlight of the late-season landscape.
