About Smooth Blue Aster

Smooth Blue Aster is widely prized for its elegant, sky-blue flowers and exceptionally smooth, blue-green foliage. This refined perennial typically grows 2 to 4 feet tall, showcasing light blue to violet blossoms with bright yellow centers that appear from late summer through autumn. Its thick, waxy leaves have a unique glaucous cast and are completely hairless, feeling remarkably smooth to the touch. Native to open woods and prairies across much of North America, it is one of the hardiest and most drought-tolerant asters available. It is a magnet for monarch butterflies and a wide variety of native bees, providing them with critical late-season forage. Smooth Blue Aster thrives in full sun to partial shade and is adaptable to many soil types, from sandy loam to clay. Unlike some taller asters, its sturdy stems do not typically require staking, making it a low-maintenance and highly attractive addition to any sun-drenched native border.
