About Blue Sky Aster
Smooth Blue Aster (Symphyotrichum laeve), also known as Sky Blue Aster, is a stunning late-season bloomer that brings a wash of brilliant azure to the autumn garden. This graceful perennial typically grows 2 to 4 feet tall and is covered in dozens of small, daisy-like flowers with bright yellow centers and petals that range from soft lavender to deep sky blue. Native to prairies and open woodlands across much of North America, it is remarkably drought-tolerant and easy to grow in full sun and well-drained soil. As one of the last nectar sources available in the fall, it is a critical resource for migrating Monarch butterflies and late-season bees. Its smooth, waxy, heart-shaped basal leaves and slender stems give it a refined appearance that fits perfectly into both formal borders and wilder meadow settings. Smooth Blue Aster is a reliable and long-lived plant that adds essential late-season interest and ecological support to any native landscape.
