About Sweet Goldenrod

Sweet Goldenrod is a sensory delight for the native garden, offering both visual beauty and a refreshing fragrance. When the leaves are crushed, they release a pleasant anise or licorice scent, a trait that led to its historical use as an herbal tea. Growing 1 to 4 feet tall, it features slender, arching stems topped with plumes of bright yellow flowers from August through September. Its narrow, dark green leaves remain attractive throughout the season, providing a fine-textured backdrop. Native to dry, sandy woods and open barrens of the eastern and central United States, it thrives in well-drained, acidic soils and is quite drought-tolerant. Sweet Goldenrod is highly attractive to a wide range of pollinators, including butterflies and native bees. Unlike some goldenrods, it is a well-behaved clump-former that does not spread aggressively, making it suitable for smaller garden spaces or formal perennial borders. It performs best in full sun to partial shade.
