About Mad-dog Skullcap
Mad-dog Skullcap, or Blue Skullcap, is a charming and resilient wetland native that offers a delicate display of sky-blue flowers throughout the peak of summer. This herbaceous perennial typically grows 1 to 3 feet tall, featuring multiple branching stems and toothed, ovate leaves. The flowers are arranged in one-sided racemes that emerge from the leaf axils, creating a graceful, tiered effect. It is native across nearly all of North America, where it inhabits marshes, stream banks, and wet meadows. As a moisture-loving species, it performs best in full sun to partial shade and soil that remains consistently wet to medium-wet. Mad-dog Skullcap is a valuable ecological asset, supporting various native bees and providing cover for small amphibians in damp environments. Historically used in herbal traditions, it is now prized by gardeners for its ability to stabilize soil in rain gardens and along shorelines. It is generally deer-resistant due to its bitter-tasting foliage, making it a reliable choice for areas with high wildlife pressure.
