About Swamp Rose

Swamp Rose is a magnificent wetland shrub that combines elegant beauty with a robust nature, making it the perfect choice for damp or poorly drained areas. Reaching heights of 3 to 7 feet, this upright shrub features arching, slightly thorny branches and finely textured, dark green leaves. In June and July, it is covered in highly fragrant, deep pink blossoms that provide a rich nectar source for butterflies, bees, and even hummingbirds. Native to the eastern half of North America, it is naturally found in marshes, swamps, and along the edges of streams and ponds. It prefers full to partial sun and consistently moist to wet soils, where it can even tolerate occasional flooding. The small, round red hips that follow the flowers are a prized food source for various bird species throughout the winter months. Because it can spread through rhizomes, it is excellent for creating a dense, flowering hedge in wet locations. Seeds require a significant period of cold-moist stratification to germinate, reflecting the plant's adaptation to northern winters.
