About Fragrant Sumac
Fragrant Sumac is a versatile and rugged deciduous shrub that offers multi-season interest and exceptional wildlife value for any native garden. Growing between 2 and 6 feet tall, this hardy plant produces clusters of tiny yellow flowers in early spring before its glossy, trifoliate leaves emerge. When crushed, the foliage releases a pleasant, spicy aroma that distinguishes it from its less friendly relatives. By late summer, female plants bear fuzzy, bright red berries that serve as a critical winter food source for birds like turkeys and robins. Native to most of the lower 48 states, Fragrant Sumac is highly adaptable, thriving in full to partial sun and well-drained, sandy, or rocky soils. It is particularly valued for its brilliant autumn display, as the leaves turn vibrant shades of orange, red, and purple. This shrub is an excellent choice for stabilizing slopes or creating low-maintenance hedges. To improve germination rates, seeds should be treated with boiling water followed by a period of cold-moist stratification to break their tough outer coats.
