About Virginia Mountain Mint
Virginia Mountain Mint (Pycnanthemum virginianum) is widely considered one of the single best plants for attracting a diverse range of pollinators, often humming with life from dawn until dusk. This upright perennial grows 2 to 3 feet tall and features slender, aromatic leaves that release a refreshing minty scent when crushed. In mid to late summer, it is topped with dense, button-like clusters of small white flowers, often speckled with delicate purple dots. Native to the moist prairies and open woods of eastern North America, it thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers medium-moist soils. Unlike some other members of the mint family, it is not overly aggressive, though it will form a substantial and attractive clump over time. Its ecological value is immense, providing high-quality nectar for honeybees, native bees, butterflies, and even predatory wasps. Virginia Mountain Mint is a must-have for any dedicated pollinator garden and is also noted for its deer and rabbit resistance due to its fragrant oils.
