About Obedient Plant

Obedient Plant is a spirited and showy native perennial that brings a burst of late-season color and a touch of whimsy to the garden. Reaching heights of two to four feet, it produces tall, square stems topped with dense spikes of snapdragon-like flowers in shades of vibrant pink, lavender, or white. The plant earns its common name from a curious trait: if you gently push an individual flower to one side, it will stay in that position, "obediently" holding its new place. Blooming from August through September, these flowers are a primary nectar source for hummingbirds and large bumblebees preparing for the cooler months. Native to moist prairies and stream banks across North America, it thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers soils that stay consistently damp. Because it spreads via rhizomes, Obedient Plant can be quite vigorous and is best suited for larger areas where it can naturalize or in rain gardens where its aggressive growth can be managed. For the best floral display, ensure it receives plenty of moisture and consider dividing the clumps every few years to maintain vigor.
