About Large-flowered Beardtongue
Large-flowered Beardtongue is a breathtaking native perennial that commands attention with its oversized, lavender-purple blossoms and striking blue-green foliage. Reaching 2 to 4 feet in height, it features thick, waxy leaves that clasp the stems, providing a unique architectural look even before the massive flowers appear in May and June. These tubular blooms are among the largest in the genus and are a favorite of hummingbirds and large bees. Native to the sandy prairies and barrens of the central United States, this species is a true specialist of dry, well-drained environments. While it has been introduced to some eastern states, it is a hallmark of the Great Plains. In the garden, it requires full sun and sandy or gravelly soil to thrive; it will not tolerate wet feet. Beyond its beauty, it is a host plant for checkerspot butterflies. Planting Large-flowered Beardtongue is a wonderful way to preserve a piece of prairie heritage while inviting stunning wildlife into your landscape.
