About Calico Beardtongue

Calico Beardtongue is a versatile and charming wildflower that bridges the gap between sunny prairies and shaded woodlands. This elegant perennial produces upright, often dark-tinted stems reaching 1 to 3 feet in height, topped with clusters of tubular, pale pink to deep lavender flowers in early summer. It is closely related to the more common Foxglove Beardtongue but is distinguished by its colorful blossoms and greater shade tolerance. Native to the eastern and central United States, it is typically found in open woods, meadows, and rocky bluffs. The nectar-rich flowers are a major draw for hummingbirds and long-tongued bees, including bumblebees and mason bees. Calico Beardtongue is highly adaptable, thriving in full sun to partial shade and medium-moisture soils. It is an excellent choice for woodland edges or semi-shaded garden beds where other sun-loving Penstemons might struggle. With its attractive foliage and reliable blooming, it provides essential early-summer color and vital support for local pollinators.
