About Purple Passion Flower

Purple Passion Flower is a spectacular native vine that brings a touch of the exotic to temperate gardens with its intricate, fringed blossoms and edible fruit. Also known as Maypop, this vigorous climber produces stunning 3-inch purple and white flowers from May through September, each featuring a complex arrangement of filaments. The vine can grow 6 to 25 feet in a single season, using tendrils to scale trellises, fences, or nearby shrubs. Native to the southeastern and south-central United States, it thrives in sunny edges and open fields with medium-moisture, well-drained soil. Ecologically, it is a powerhouse; it serves as a larval host for the Gulf Fritillary, Variegated Fritillary, and Zebra Heliconian butterflies. The green, egg-shaped fruits turn yellow when ripe and offer a sweet, tropical flavor. While it can spread via root suckers, it is easily managed in a garden setting. Plant it in a sunny spot to maximize its prolific blooming and enjoy the parade of butterflies it brings to your doorstep.
