About American Lotus

American Lotus is a magnificent aquatic perennial that commands attention in ponds, lakes, and slow-moving rivers. This native giant is renowned for its massive, pale yellow flowers that can reach up to 10 inches in diameter, rising majestically on sturdy stalks above the water's surface from June through September. Its enormous, circular leaves are equally striking, often measuring over 2 feet across and featuring a unique waxy coating that causes water to bead and roll off like liquid silver. After the fragrant blooms fade, the plant develops iconic, showerhead-shaped seed pods that are highly valued for dried floral arrangements. Native to much of the eastern and central United States, American Lotus thrives in full sun and still or slow waters with rich, muddy bottoms. While it provides excellent cover for fish and habitat for waterfowl, its vigorous colonial growth habit makes it best suited for larger water bodies where it can roam freely. This prehistoric-looking beauty is a true centerpiece for any large-scale native water garden or wetland restoration.
