About Leafy Satin Grass
Leafy Satin Grass, also known as Mexican Muhly or Wirestem Muhly, is a versatile and attractive native warm-season grass that brings a soft, textured look to the landscape. Reaching heights of two to three feet, it is characterized by its lush, green foliage and slender, branching stems that create a graceful, mounded form. In late summer and early autumn, it produces narrow, feathery flower spikes that have a subtle silken sheen, adding delicate movement to the garden. Native to a variety of habitats including moist prairies, thickets, and woodland edges across much of North America, it is remarkably adaptable to different light levels, thriving in everything from full sun to shade. This grass provides valuable cover and nesting material for birds and small mammals, while its seeds offer a late-season food source. It spreads via short rhizomes, making it an excellent choice for stabilizing soil on slopes or in damp areas. Low-maintenance and resilient, Leafy Satin Grass is a perfect choice for naturalized areas or as a soft backdrop in a mixed perennial border.
