About Seedbox
Seedbox is a charming wetland perennial named for its unique, box-like seed capsules that audibly rattle when shaken. This upright plant typically grows 2 to 3 feet tall, featuring lance-shaped green leaves that provide a lush backdrop for its bright yellow, four-petaled flowers. Blooming from June through August, these blossoms are a magnet for various bees and other pollinators seeking nectar in damp habitats. Native to much of the eastern and central United States, Seedbox is commonly found in floodplain woodlands, swamps, and along the muddy margins of ponds and streams. It thrives in full sun and consistently moist to wet, often acidic soils, making it an ideal candidate for rain gardens or low-lying areas. As the season wanes, the foliage often takes on attractive reddish hues, and the persistent square fruits add architectural interest to the winter garden. Its ability to provide essential ecological value while adding unique visual texture makes it a standout in water-focused native plantings.
