About Greene's Rush

Greene's Rush is a distinctive and hardy perennial that brings a deep, rich green color and structural interest to sandy or disturbed landscapes. Reaching about 1 to 2 feet in height, it is characterized by its stiffly upright, dark green stems and its compact clusters of brownish-green flowers that appear in mid-summer (June-August). This species is often found in its native range growing in moist, sandy soils near dunes, lakeshores, and open woodland edges. Like many rushes, it is a cool-season grower, showing its most vigorous growth in the spring and fall. It is remarkably adaptable to fluctuating water levels and can handle intermittent dry spells once established, making it an excellent candidate for rain gardens or sandy restoration sites. It prefers full to partial sun and medium to dry-mesic conditions. Greene's Rush provides valuable cover for small wildlife and is a resilient choice for stabilizing soil in areas with poor or sandy substrates, offering both ecological benefits and a unique, vertical aesthetic.
