About Canada Rush

Canada Rush is a dependable and attractive perennial that adds fine-textured beauty to any wetland or water feature. This tufted rush typically grows 1 to 3 feet tall, producing stiff, upright stems topped with branching, spherical clusters of greenish-brown flowers that bloom from July into October. As the seeds mature, the seed heads turn a warm cinnamon-brown, providing visual interest through the winter months. Native to marshes, bogs, and sandy lake margins across much of North America, it is a vital component of healthy wetland ecosystems, offering food and cover for various insects and waterfowl. It thrives in full to partial sun and consistently moist to wet soils, and it can even tolerate brief periods of shallow standing water. Canada Rush is an excellent selection for restoration projects, rain gardens, and the edges of naturalized ponds. Its clump-forming habit and resilience to varying water levels make it a low-maintenance and ecologically beneficial addition to the native landscape.
