About Porcupine Grass-Untrimmed

Porcupine Grass is a fascinating and structurally unique cool-season bunchgrass that adds dynamic movement to the prairie. Growing 2 to 4 feet tall, it is most famous for its extraordinary seeds, which feature long, twisted awns reaching up to 7 inches. These awns respond to humidity, literally drilling the seed into the soil—a remarkable natural engineering feat. Native to the central North American prairies, this grass thrives in full sun and well-drained, medium to dry soils. It provides essential cover for ground-nesting birds, while its early-season growth offers a lush green presence in spring. Because the sharp seeds can be hazardous to pets or livestock, it is best planted in managed natural areas. To grow from seed, a 60-day cold-moist stratification (C60) is recommended to ensure even germination in the spring.
