About White Avens

White Avens is a versatile and ecologically important member of the woodland community, offering subtle beauty and stability to shaded landscapes. This perennial typically reaches heights of 1.5 to 2.5 feet and produces small, pure white flowers with five petals from late spring into mid-summer. A notable feature is its semi-evergreen basal foliage, which resembles strawberry leaves and provides groundcover interest even in winter. Native to a wide range of habitats across eastern and central North America, it is frequently found in deciduous forests, thickets, and shaded yards. White Avens is highly adaptable, growing well in partial to full shade and various soil types, from medium-wet to medium-dry. It supports a variety of small pollinators, including solitary bees and beneficial flies. While its hooked seeds are known for clinging to clothing and fur, this plant is a fantastic, deer-resistant choice for woodland restoration or low-maintenance shade gardens where it can naturalize easily.
