About Yellow Avens

Yellow Avens is a cheerful and robust perennial that brings a bright splash of color to moist meadows and open woodlands. Standing between 2 and 4 feet tall, this plant features hairy stems topped with delicate, five-petaled bright yellow flowers that bloom from June through August. Its basal leaves are pinnately divided and provide a lush green foundation throughout the growing season. Native across much of northern North America, Yellow Avens thrives in full to partial sun and prefers consistently moist to wet soils. It is a valuable resource for native bees and syrphid flies that visit for nectar and pollen. As the flowers fade, they develop distinctive clusters of hooked seeds (achenes) designed to hitch a ride on passing wildlife for dispersal. In the landscape, it is an excellent choice for rain gardens, low-lying areas, or naturalized borders. It is easy to grow and requires very little maintenance once established, making it a reliable addition for supporting local biodiversity in damp habitats.
