About White Wood Aster
White Wood Aster is the perfect solution for those challenging shady corners of the garden where few other plants thrive. This charming native perennial creates a low-growing mound of dark green, heart-shaped leaves that serve as an excellent groundcover throughout the spring and summer. In late summer and autumn, the plant is transformed by a profusion of delicate, star-like white flowers with centers that transition from yellow to deep red as they age. Typically reaching 1 to 2 feet in height, White Wood Aster is native to the deciduous forests of eastern North America, where it naturally illuminates the forest floor. It is highly valued for its ability to tolerate dry shade and poor soils, making it an indispensable tool for woodland gardening. Ecologically, it is a vital resource for late-season pollinators, including bees and butterflies, and serves as a host plant for the Silvery Checkerspot butterfly. For the most prolific blooming, plant it in partial to full shade in well-drained soil. Its sprawling habit and reliable fall color make it a must-have for any shade-focused native landscape.
