About Boneset

Common Boneset is a moisture-loving powerhouse that brings both architectural beauty and immense ecological value to the wetland garden. This robust perennial is instantly recognizable by its unique 'perfoliate' leaves, which appear to be pierced by the hairy central stem, creating a distinctive look even before the flowers arrive. Standing between 3 and 5 feet tall, Boneset produces large, flat-topped clusters of fuzzy white blossoms from mid-summer into early autumn. These nectar-rich flowers are a magnet for a diverse array of pollinators, including native bees, wasps, and butterflies like the Great Spangled Fritillary. Native across much of central and eastern North America, it thrives in sunny, wet to medium-wet soils, making it an ideal choice for rain gardens, pond edges, or low-lying areas of a meadow. Historically valued in herbal traditions, it is now prized by gardeners for its resilience and ability to support local wildlife. For best results, provide ample moisture and full to partial sun, as this plant is perfectly adapted to life in damp, fertile environments.
