About Yellow Trout Lily

Yellow Trout Lily is a radiant spring treasure that lights up the forest floor with its bright, nodding blossoms each April. Similar in habit to its white cousin, this 4 to 8-inch tall perennial features stunning yellow flowers with reflexed petals that expose deep reddish-brown stamens. The plant is equally prized for its decorative, tongue-shaped leaves, which are beautifully mottled with brown and green patterns resembling trout skin. Native to rich deciduous woodlands and stream banks throughout eastern North America, Yellow Trout Lily is a true spring ephemeral, completing its growth cycle before the forest canopy fully closes. It prefers shade and moist, nutrient-rich soils where it can slowly form expansive carpets over many years. These colonies provide essential early-season forage for native bees, particularly Andrena miner bees. Because it spends most of the year dormant underground as a small corm, it is an excellent choice for naturalizing under large shade trees where its vibrant color provides a welcome sign of spring.
