About Purple Love Grass

Purple Love Grass is a show-stopping native grass that transforms dry, sunny landscapes into a hazy sea of violet during the late summer. This low-growing, mounding perennial typically reaches 1 to 2 feet in height, featuring stiff, green foliage that provides a clean texture early in the season. Its true glory lies in its massive, airy flower panicles that appear in August and September. These delicate, reddish-purple clusters create a cloud-like effect that is breathtaking when planted in large sweeps. Native to sandy prairies, roadsides, and open fields across the eastern and central United States, it is a champion of tough, dry conditions. It thrives in full sun and poor, sandy, or gravelly soils where other plants might wither. Beyond its aesthetics, Purple Love Grass provides valuable cover for small wildlife and its seeds are a food source for various songbirds. In the autumn, the entire seed head often breaks off and tumbles across the landscape like a purple tumbleweed, efficiently scattering seeds. It is a must-have for water-wise gardens and coastal plantings.
