About Illinois Bundle Flower
Illinois Bundle Flower is a unique and highly functional native legume that combines delicate, fern-like beauty with exceptional ecological benefits. This bushy perennial grows 2 to 4 feet tall and is easily recognized by its twice-pinnately compound leaves that fold up when touched or in bright sunlight. In mid-summer, it produces unusual, globe-shaped clusters of white flowers that look like fuzzy little balls. These are followed by distinctive, curved seed pods that bunch together in decorative 'bundles,' persisting into winter and providing visual interest. Native to prairies, stream banks, and open woods across the central United States, it is a deep-rooted survivor that thrives in full sun and various soil types. As a nitrogen-fixer, it is excellent for soil restoration, and its protein-rich seeds are a top-tier food source for northern bobwhite, wild turkeys, and other songbirds. It is easy to grow from seed and is a must-have for any wildlife-focused or restoration-style planting.
