About Wild Blue Larkspur
Wild Blue Larkspur, also known as Carolina Larkspur, brings the coveted true-blue hues of the wild prairie directly into your garden. This elegant perennial produces slender, upright spikes reaching 1 to 3 feet tall, adorned with deeply palmate, fine-textured leaves. In early to mid-summer, the stems are topped with stunning spurred flowers ranging from azure blue to deep violet, occasionally appearing in white. Native to dry prairies, rocky glades, and open woodlands across the central and southeastern United States, it is a tough survivor that thrives in harsh, sunny conditions. It is a vital early-season nectar source for hummingbirds and bumblebees, whose long tongues are perfectly adapted to reach the nectar hidden deep within the floral spurs. For success, plant in full sun and well-drained, even rocky or sandy soil. While it is a short-lived perennial, it often self-seeds in open ground, ensuring a lasting display of its spectacular blue spires.
