About Rough Sand Sedge

Rough Sand Sedge, also known as Schweinitz's Flatsedge, is a specialized and hardy perennial sedge that is perfectly adapted to life in the harshest, sandiest environments. Growing between 8 and 30 inches tall, this perennial sedge features stiff, triangular stems and narrow, grass-like leaves that form tidy, upright clumps. In early summer, it produces distinctive, bristly flower spikes that turn a golden-brown as they mature, adding subtle texture to the landscape. Native to sandy prairies, dunes, and rocky outcroppings across much of central North America, it is a master of drought tolerance and soil stabilization. Its deep, rhizomatous root system helps anchor shifting sands, making it an invaluable species for dune restoration and erosion control in sandy areas. Rough Sand Sedge requires full to partial sun and thrives in dry, well-drained sandy or gravelly soils. It is a low-maintenance choice for rock gardens, xeric landscapes, or sandy wildflower meadows, providing essential structure and habitat for small insects.
