About Blue Bead Lily

Blue Bead Lily is a stunning and refined woodland perennial that brings a sense of the deep, cool forest to your shade garden. This plant features a basal clump of large, shiny, oval leaves that remain attractive all season. In late spring, from May to early July, a leafless stem rises 8 to 15 inches, topped with a cluster of nodding, pale yellow, bell-shaped flowers. The real show begins in late summer when the flowers transform into striking, porcelain-like berries of a deep, electric blue. Native to the acidic, moist forests of northeastern North America, it is a quintessential species of the northern woods. While the berries are not for human consumption, they provide food for various wildlife, and the flowers are visited by native bees. Blue Bead Lily requires a cool, shaded site with moist, acidic, and organically rich soil. It does not tolerate high heat or humidity, making it an ideal choice for northern gardeners or those with shaded, damp microclimates. Once established, it slowly spreads to form a beautiful and unique groundcover.
