About Purple Clematis

Purple Clematis is a sophisticated and understated native vine that brings a touch of wild beauty to the shaded edges of your garden. Unlike the large-flowered hybrids, this species features elegant, nodding, bell-shaped flowers in shades of violet-purple that bloom in late spring and early summer. The delicate flowers are followed by attractive, silky seed heads that persist into the fall, providing multi-season interest. Native to rocky woods, cliffs, and thickets across northern North America, this vine uses its twisting leaf stalks to climb 6 to 10 feet up nearby structures or shrubs. It is a valuable nectar source for hummingbirds and bees and provides nesting cover for small birds. Purple Clematis prefers partial shade and cool, moist, well-drained soils, often thriving in rocky or calcareous sites. It is less aggressive than many other vines, making it a perfect choice for trellises or naturalizing along a woodland border where it can scramble over rocks or low-growing vegetation.
