About Fremont's Leather Flower

Fremont's Leather Flower is a unique and captivating native perennial that defies the typical image of a climbing Clematis. Instead of a vine, this species forms a sturdy, upright, shrub-like mound reaching about 12 to 18 inches in height, featuring thick, leathery, bluish-green leaves. In mid-spring, typically April and May, it produces nodding, bell-shaped flowers that are a soft lavender to purple, followed by fascinating, feathery seed heads that provide ornamental interest well into the summer. Native to a very restricted range in the limestone glades and prairies of Missouri, Nebraska, and Kansas, it is a rare gem for the rock garden or prairie border. It is highly attractive to native bees and adds a structural element to the landscape that is both rare and beautiful. Fremont's Leather Flower thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained, even rocky or lime-rich soils. It is incredibly drought-tolerant once established and is long-lived, making it a sustainable choice for gardeners looking for something truly special and resilient.
