About Carolina Spring Beauty

Carolina Spring Beauty is a delicate and charming woodland ephemeral that signals the arrival of spring with its soft, starry blooms. This low-growing perennial reaches only 4 to 8 inches in height and features broad, succulent leaves that are wider than those of its close relative, the common Spring Beauty. Its flowers are white to pale pink, often adorned with intricate pink veining that guides pollinators to the nectar. Native to rich, moist woods in the northeastern United States and Appalachian Mountains, it completes its entire life cycle in the brief window before the forest canopy closes. These early blooms provide a crucial first food source for queen bumblebees and other early-emerging pollinators. Carolina Spring Beauty prefers partial to full shade and moist, organically rich soils. It grows from a small, edible tuberous root known as a 'fairy spud.' For a successful woodland garden, plant these in areas where they can remain undisturbed, allowing them to naturalize and form beautiful drifts of color each spring.
