About Tall Thistle

Tall Thistle is a majestic biennial or short-lived perennial that stands as a testament to the beauty and ecological importance of our native flora. True to its name, this impressive plant can reach heights of 3 to 8 feet, topped with large, vibrant purple flower heads from mid-summer through autumn. Unlike its invasive relatives, Tall Thistle is well-behaved and features leaves that are typically white and woolly underneath, a key distinguishing characteristic. It is native to the eastern and central United States, often found in open woodlands, savannas, and along meadow edges. This species is a powerhouse for wildlife, providing high-quality nectar for long-tongued bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, while its seeds are a favorite food source for goldfinches. It also serves as a larval host for the Painted Lady and Swamp Metalmark butterflies. Tall Thistle prefers full to partial sun and medium moisture in well-drained soils. Because it is a biennial, it spends its first year as a low-growing rosette before sending up its flowering stalk in the second year, so patience is rewarded with a spectacular display.
