About Wood Reed Grass

Wood Reed Grass is a graceful, tall native grass that brings a touch of elegance to the shaded corners of your landscape. Reaching heights of 2 to 5 feet, this perennial is characterized by its broad, nodding seed heads and lush, light green foliage that remains attractive throughout the growing season. In late summer, it produces delicate, airy panicles that sway gently in the breeze, adding movement and texture to woodland gardens. Native to much of eastern North America, it thrives in moist to wet soils and dappled sunlight, making it a perfect choice for stream banks, low-lying areas, or shaded borders. Beyond its visual appeal, Wood Reed Grass provides essential cover for small mammals and serves as a larval host for several species of skipper butterflies. It is an excellent, non-invasive alternative to exotic shade grasses. For best results, plant in rich, loamy soil and ensure consistent moisture, as it does not tolerate prolonged drought. Once established, it is a low-maintenance addition that naturalizes beautifully in the right environment.
