About Fen Panicled Sedge

Fen Panicled Sedge, or Prairie Sedge, is a specialized cool-season perennial that excels in wet, often calcareous environments. This clumping sedge typically reaches heights of 1.5 to 3 feet, featuring slender, upright stems topped with airy, panicled flower clusters in June and July. Its fine-textured foliage creates a soft, mounded appearance that is both functional and attractive. Native to the northern United States and Canada, it is most frequently found in high-quality fens, wet meadows, and marshes, often indicating stable hydrology. In the landscape, it is a superb choice for rain gardens, wetland restorations, and bioswales where it helps to filter water and stabilize soil. The plant provides valuable nesting material and cover for wetland birds and is a host for various specialist insects. It performs best in full sun and consistently wet soils, particularly those with a calcareous or sandy-mucky composition. Its reliable clumping habit makes it an excellent structural component in naturalized water features.
