About Awned Graceful Sedge

Awned Graceful Sedge (Carex davisii), also known as Davis' Sedge, is a sophisticated choice for adding texture and color to the dappled edges of woodland gardens. This perennial sedge typically grows between 12 and 36 inches tall, forming loose, elegant tufts of light green stems. Its most striking feature is the collection of cylindrical spikelets that nod gracefully at maturity, eventually turning a rich, warm dull orange to brown. The leaves are broad for a sedge, reaching up to 8 mm wide, providing a lush, grassy appearance. Native to deciduous woodlands and floodplain forests, this species thrives in partial sun or shade and prefers moist, loamy soils. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, it serves as a vital host plant for the Appalachian Brown butterfly and provides nutritious seeds for wildlife. It is an excellent selection for stabilizing wooded slopes or enhancing a shaded rain garden.
