About Crested Oval Sedge

Crested Oval Sedge (Carex cristatella), also known as Crested Sedge, is a versatile and visually interesting native plant that excels in moist garden environments. This clump-forming species typically grows 12 to 40 inches tall, featuring lush, bright green foliage and distinctive, globose seed heads that appear 'crested' or prickly. These attractive seed clusters emerge in mid-summer and provide a unique textural element that lasts well into the season. Native to the central and eastern United States, it is frequently found in wet prairies, marshes, and along the edges of floodplains. Ecologically, it provides forage for various insects and cover for small wildlife. Crested Oval Sedge is remarkably adaptable, thriving in full sun to near full shade, though it requires consistently moist soils. It is a fantastic option for rain gardens, low-lying areas, or wetland restorations, where it can even spread by prostrate stems rooting at the nodes.
