About Buxbaum's Sedge
Buxbaum's Sedge is a sophisticated wetland native that adds a touch of color and structure to damp garden sites. This rhizomatous perennial grows between 2 and 3 feet tall, distinguished by its blue-green foliage and unique flower spikes that feature dark purple-brown scales. A notable characteristic is the reddish or purple tint at the base of the leaf sheaths, which helps in its identification. Native to fens, marshes, and sedge meadows across the northern United States and Canada, it is a key component of healthy wetland ecosystems. It provides habitat for wetland-dependent insects and its seeds are a food source for waterfowl. Buxbaum's Sedge thrives in full sun and requires wet, often calcareous or peaty soils. It is a slow spreader that can eventually form significant stands, making it an excellent choice for wetland restoration projects, shoreline stabilization, or as a focal point in a consistently moist garden bed.
