About Sm Yellow Fox Sedge

Small Yellow Fox Sedge is a versatile and dependable workhorse for the sunny rain garden or wet meadow. This clump-forming sedge reaches 1 to 3 feet in height and features dense mounds of narrow, yellow-green leaves. Its common name comes from the bristly, branched seed heads that turn a warm, fox-like yellow-brown as they mature in mid-summer (May to June). Naturally occurring in wet prairies, ditches, and along pond edges, it is well-adapted to areas that experience periodic flooding or consistently moist conditions. The dense foliage provides excellent nesting material and cover for birds, while the abundant seeds are a favored food source for waterfowl and granivorous songbirds. Small Yellow Fox Sedge is remarkably adaptable and can handle a variety of soil types, including heavy clay. Its upright habit and attractive seed heads make it a popular choice for bioswales and erosion control projects. Whether used in a formal rain garden or a wilder wetland restoration, this sedge provides reliable structure and ecological value.
