About Fringed Brome
Fringed Brome is an elegant, cool-season grass that adds a sense of graceful movement to any moist meadow or woodland edge. It is easily recognized by its distinctive, nodding seed heads that dance in the slightest breeze. Reaching heights of two to five feet, this perennial grass features slender stems and soft, hairy leaves. In mid to late summer, it produces delicate, drooping panicles of spikelets that have a unique 'fringed' appearance due to the fine hairs on the edges of the glumes. Native to a broad range across North America, it is most common in wet prairies, fens, and moist woods. It provides excellent cover for small mammals and birds, and its seeds are a food source for various wildlife. Fringed Brome thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers consistently moist soils. It is a wonderful choice for restoration projects or for adding a soft, naturalistic touch to the home landscape.
