About Smallspike False Nettle

Smallspike False Nettle is a versatile and ecologically significant plant that proves you don't need showy petals to make a big impact. A sting-free relative of the common nettle, it is a safe and welcome addition to any native landscape. Typically growing 2 to 3 feet tall, it features lush, lance-shaped leaves with toothed margins and unique, upright spikes of tiny greenish-white flowers that appear from July into September. This hardy perennial is native across North America, commonly found in wet meadows, riverbanks, and swampy woodlands. Its true value lies in its role as a critical larval host for several beautiful butterflies, including the Red Admiral, Question Mark, and Eastern Comma. It performs best in partial shade and moist to wet soils, though it can handle sunnier spots if the ground remains consistently damp. It is an excellent choice for rain gardens or naturalized wetland edges.
