About Small Yellow Wild Indigo
Also known as Horsefly Weed, Small Yellow Wild Indigo is a charming, fine-textured perennial that sparkles with dainty yellow flowers throughout the midsummer months. This species has a more delicate, airy appearance than other Baptisias, growing 2 to 3 feet tall with many slender branches and small, clover-like leaves. It produces numerous small, bright yellow flowers from June to August, creating a soft, misty effect in the garden. Native to the eastern United States, it is often found in dry, open woods, clearings, and sandy barrens. It is a critical host plant for the Frosted Elfin butterfly and the Wild Indigo Duskywing, while also supporting a wide variety of specialist bees. Prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained, medium-wet to dry soils. It is particularly well-suited for poor, sandy, or acidic soils where other plants might struggle, making it a tough and versatile choice for restoration projects.
