About Oats

Oats are a versatile and fast-growing cool-season annual grass that serves as an exceptional cover crop and nursery plant for native restorations. Typically reaching 2 to 3 feet in height, its slender green stems and characteristic drooping seed heads provide quick soil stabilization and weed suppression while slower-growing perennials become established. While not a long-term fixture in a permanent native planting, it plays a crucial role in the early stages of habitat creation by protecting young seedlings from erosion and extreme weather. It thrives in full sun and a wide range of soil conditions, from moist to dry. Ecologically, it provides quick forage and cover for birds and small mammals. As an annual, it will not persist year after year, eventually giving way to the permanent native species in the mix. It is easily grown by direct sowing in early spring or late summer, requiring no special treatment for germination.
