About Great Indian Plantain

Great Indian Plantain is a massive, bold-textured perennial that brings a touch of the wild forest to the home landscape. This impressive plant can reach heights of 3 to 9 feet, making it one of the tallest forbs in its native habitat. Its most striking feature is its enormous, fan-shaped leaves that can reach over a foot in width, featuring deep lobes and a lush green color. During the summer months, it produces large, branching clusters of small white flowers that attract a wide variety of pollinators, including butterflies and beneficial wasps. Native to rich, moist forests and floodplains in the eastern and central U.S., it prefers partial shade and fertile, medium-wet soil. While it is a giant in the garden, its upright habit ensures it doesn't flop, providing a reliable vertical element. It is a fantastic choice for the back of a large border or for stabilizing soil along a shaded creek bank where its extensive root system can thrive.
