About Tall Thimbleweed

Tall Thimbleweed is a stately and adaptable perennial that brings wild elegance to woodland edges and shaded garden corners. Reaching heights of 1 to 2.5 feet (occasionally up to 3 feet), it produces delicate, creamy white or greenish-white flowers from early to mid-summer. These transform into iconic thimble-shaped seed heads that eventually burst into soft, cottony masses, providing a striking winter silhouette and nesting material for birds. Native to a variety of habitats across eastern North America, from moist prairies to open woods, it is notably more shade-tolerant than its cousin, Anemone cylindrica. It thrives in medium to dry loamy soils and handles anything from full sun to light shade. Tall Thimbleweed is a favorite of small bees and flower flies, and its foliage contains protoanemonin, making it naturally resistant to deer and rabbits. It is a reliable, low-maintenance choice for adding vertical structure and ecological value to any native landscape.
